James Wan’s New Horror Film, ‘MALIGNANT’, Debuts Trailer

James Wan is the man responsible for SawInsidious, and The Conjuring, three relatively big franchises in the genre for the past decade and a half. Today, Warner Bros./HBO Max has debuted the trailer and poster for his upcoming September shocker, Malignant. Check out the trailer, synopsis, poster, and my initial takeaway below.

Director James Wan – architect of “The Conjuring” universe – returns to his roots with a completely new and original horror thriller. Paralyzed by shocking visions of grisly murders, Madison’s torment worsens as she discovers that her waking dreams are in fact terrifying realities.

I’m a fan of James Wan has done with modern horror and the fact that he has a few franchises under his belt means that not only are horror fans attentive to his work but Wan finds a way to make it into the mainstream. While this does look more like a one-off (ala Dead Silence), franchises are decided by the general public nowadays. After watching this trailer, it really doesn’t feel like the “giallo-esque” film that I thought we were getting but it still looks relatively solid. Either way, in less than a couple of months, we’ll know what Malignant brings to the genre!

MALIGNANT is in theatres and on HBO Max on September 10, 2021.
