Late Nite Grindhouse Presents ‘MARK OF THE DEVIL’ at Marcus Des Peres 14 Cine on March 27 & 28
We started off the year with Mario Bava’s seminal proto-slasher, BAY OF BLOOD, which was originally released by the notorious Hallmark Releasing Corporation and was “the second film rated V for violence”. We hit the rewind button and give you the “first film rated V for violence”, MARK OF THE DEVIL. This film is more of a retelling of WITCHFINDER GENERAL through a grimy lens, which stars the late Udo Kier and Reggie Nalder. We’ll be doing a deep-dive into the history of Hallmark Releasing Corporation on the podcast as well. Come see the film that invented the theatrical barf bag gimmick! “Guaranteed to upset your stomach.”
SYNOPSIS for Mark of the Devil
One of the most notorious horror movies of the drive-in era, MARK OF THE DEVIL is a brutal and bloody critique of religious corruption. Count Christian von Meruh (Udo Kier, FLESH FOR FRANKENSTEIN) is a witch hunter apprentice whose faith becomes tested. The Count slowly begins to realize that witch trials are a cover for the church to rob people of their land, money . . . and more.
