Help FX Legend John Carl Buechler Fight Stage IV Prostate Cancer

John Carl Buechler is a special effects artist and director that may not get the name recognition of Tom Savini, Rick Baker, Rob Bottin or Greg Nictotero but you know and probably love his work. He created those little shits from Ghoulies that scared plenty of children in the 80’s. He also worked on From BeyondTerrorVisionA Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master and plenty of other films. Not only that but he directed Troll and Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood. Also, since we are based out of St. Louis, I feel we need to mention that he is a graduate of SIUE (Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville) in addition to being born and attended school in Belleville, IL. Hell, you can see that he did costumes for an SIUE production of Doctor Faustus in October 1973. John is a local boy and he needs our help fighting a true nightmare.

John has been diagnosed with Stage IV Prostate Cancer. While there are not a ton of details on John’s progress, what I do know about this type of cancer is that it isn’t curable. However, treatments will extend John’s life and hopefully reduce some of the symptoms. I don’t think I have to tell anyone that they aren’t giving away treatments and an artist in the special effects industry in this day and age is not flush with cash, especially if they do not have steady work (not sure if he’s retired from the makeup business or not according to IMDb). According to his GoFundMe page, John has keeping this mostly quiet while exhausting his insurance and personal savings. Horror fans are family. Let’s band together and help John kick cancer’s ass.

Donate and/or spread the word about his GoFundMe. If you can’t donate, pass it to your horror brethren.

Andy Triefenbach is the Editor-in-Chief and owner of DestroytheBrain.com. In addition to his role on the site, he also programs St. Louis' monthly horror & exploitation theatrical midnight program, Late Nite Grindhouse. Coming from a household of a sci-fi father and a horror/supernatural loving mother, Andy's path to loving genre film was clear. He misses VHS and his personal Saturday night 6 tape movie marathons from his youth.
