Music Video: Carpenter Brut Mixes It Up With Lucio Fulci

Murder Rock (aka Murder Rock: Dancing Death) isn’t going to convert any new horror fans who are looking to get into Lucio Fulci.  In fact, even most Fulci fans completely disregard this piece of retro trash as a misstep for the Italian “Godfather of Gore.”  The film is almost entirely without any major gore (something he became known for), devoid of any plot, and seems intent to only stimulate male horror fans through repetitive shots of sweaty girls dancing around in leg warmers and leotards.  Though that last image isn’t going to really stimulate me, I do find this film fairly entertaining on a ridiculous 80’s-loving level; keep in mind that I do also own a copy of Xanadu.  Those who don’t want to suffer through this failed Fulci flick may want to give the new music video by Carpenter Brut a shot to get a taste of the film without wasting an hour and a half on this sleazy 1984 travesty.  Their new video for the song “Le Perv” includes footage from the film which originally included a score from Keith Emerson of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer fame.  Carpenter Brut mixes up classic 80’s synth sounds in a modern throwback electronic style.  Many will be quick to compare them to the Parisian duo Justice who also took a page out of the Italian horror playbook with their song “Phantom” – which sampled Goblin’s score from Dario Argento’s Tenebrae.  I have attached the NSFW music video below along with an embed to listen to some of the other tracks from their upcoming EP.  It’s a fun listen if you are into 80’s influenced dance music with song titles like “Disco Zombi Italia.”

Somewhere between growing up on a steady diet of Saturday morning trips to the local comic-book shop, collecting an unhealthy amount of action figures, and frequent viewings of Ray Harryhausen and Hammer Horror films, came forth a nerdy boy that was torn between journalism and the arts. In high school, Michael found himself writing a movie column for the school newspaper. Yet, he went on to get a BFA in Studio Art at Webster University. When not writing about films, you can still find him discussing classic horror, collecting action figures, and reading Batman. Clearly, not much has changed.
