Ti West Explains Why You Should Pay to See ‘The Innkeepers’

One of the most comedic and haunting ghost stories to come out in recent years is Ti West’s The Innkeepers.  Utilizing precise editing to keep you laughing one minute before slowly elevating the tension a little more the next, Ti West has created what feels like a traditional “ghost-story” that elevates its characters and story over style and shock.  That is not to say though that the film is not without a few well-timed scares that will leave you with some startling imagery.  Horror fans will recognize the commonly titled “slow-burn” style of the film as what the director had previously mastered in 2009’s The House of the Devil.  This Friday, December 30, The Innkeepers will be open for business on VOD.  The film will then later open in a limited theatrical release on February 3.  In an attempt to curb the number of people that might take the cheap and easy route and watch the film on torrent sites once the film goes public on Friday, Ti West has formally written a letter to all of us who are wanting to see his new film.  In the letter he explains that he doesn’t want us to not download it for financial reasons (apparently he will be making zip off of it even if you do), but he wants you to pay to watch it because it encourages the continued creation of independent films and other forms of art.  Obviously people flock in herds to see and pay for Michael Bay’s new films and studios are fully aware of this.  Yet, the independent studios and financiers don’t always want to gamble on a small film these days if they know no one wants to go and see it.  These days, they obviously don’t know this unless you pay to see it.  It’s a logical argument that is put in better words from the director himself.  Click the link below to read the statement from the director, writer, editor, producer, Ti West.  Below that you can find a list of select cites and dates where you can find the film when it opens theatrically.  Hopefully, if his letter (and maybe this article) makes at least one person stop  and think before illegally downloading the new film, than we have done our job.  Take my word on it.  I saw it at Fantastic Fest earlier this year . . . trust me . . . its good enough to pay for it.

Somewhere between growing up on a steady diet of Saturday morning trips to the local comic-book shop, collecting an unhealthy amount of action figures, and frequent viewings of Ray Harryhausen and Hammer Horror films, came forth a nerdy boy that was torn between journalism and the arts. In high school, Michael found himself writing a movie column for the school newspaper. Yet, he went on to get a BFA in Studio Art at Webster University. When not writing about films, you can still find him discussing classic horror, collecting action figures, and reading Batman. Clearly, not much has changed.
