The First Clip from THE THING Prequel Bursts Through the Ice

The Thing prequel/remake is almost upon us.  Starring Scott Pilgrim vs The World darling Mary Elizabeth Winstead, the film finally reveals what happened at the Norwegian research base.  I have to hand it to the filmmakers behind this project.  Instead of taking the easy route and simply remaking John Carpenters film (which is technically a remake as well), they have crafted a story that leads up to the timeline of Kurt Russell and his team.  For me the elements that will either make or break this film is if they are able to capture the tone of the 1982 film while also incorporating the unique creature designs first imagined by Rob Bottin.  Given what is seen in this new clip, it looks like they have achieved the creature’s unique look (though blink, and you’ll miss it). Keep reading to see the first clip from The Thing.

MTV was able to get the first clip seen below.  Accompanied with this clip on MTV’s site is an interview with star Mary Elizabeth Winstead where she reveals that there are “a lot of practical effects stuff there, which is great and kind of seeing the beginning of it on set was terrifying in itself and disgusting.” The Thing gets loose in theaters on Oct. 14.

Somewhere between growing up on a steady diet of Saturday morning trips to the local comic-book shop, collecting an unhealthy amount of action figures, and frequent viewings of Ray Harryhausen and Hammer Horror films, came forth a nerdy boy that was torn between journalism and the arts. In high school, Michael found himself writing a movie column for the school newspaper. Yet, he went on to get a BFA in Studio Art at Webster University. When not writing about films, you can still find him discussing classic horror, collecting action figures, and reading Batman. Clearly, not much has changed.
