The Director of the Best STAR WARS Movie Passes Away

It bring me great sadness to report that Irvin Kershner has passed away. At 87, the director leaves behind a trio of great sequels to successful franchises. Though a director of TV and film since the 60’s, Irvin Kershner made a name for himself for directing what many consider the greatest Star Wars film in the entire six film saga: The Empire Strikes Back. After the success he had with Star Wars, he went on to direct the “non-official” James Bond thriller that returned Sean Connery to the lead role, Never Say Never Again. He concluded his run of franchise sequels with the underrated Robocop 2 in 1990. To a man that has made a major dent in the history of genre and Sci-Fi films, I tip my hat to you and say thank you. If I ever had a chance to meet him, I would probably have concluded our meeting with, “I love you.” In my head, he would’ve responded back in his most debonair Han Solo impression, “I know.”

Somewhere between growing up on a steady diet of Saturday morning trips to the local comic-book shop, collecting an unhealthy amount of action figures, and frequent viewings of Ray Harryhausen and Hammer Horror films, came forth a nerdy boy that was torn between journalism and the arts. In high school, Michael found himself writing a movie column for the school newspaper. Yet, he went on to get a BFA in Studio Art at Webster University. When not writing about films, you can still find him discussing classic horror, collecting action figures, and reading Batman. Clearly, not much has changed.
