See What Class Warfare Looks Like in the Future With the Trailer for ‘ELYSIUM’

As if you needed more reasons to be jealous of people who have more money than you, the trailer for Elysium is here to show us that the majority aren’t going to be sitting pretty 146 years from now.  Better start saving those pennies now.  The first trailer for Neill Blomkamp’s follow-up to the 2009 surprise hit District 9 has finally been released and looks to continue the dirty and grungy sci-fi aesthetic he previously explored.  Elysium was ranked No. 5 on My Most Anticipated List I composed back in January.  While the film certainly has my interest after viewing the footage, I have a feeling the trailer is holding back quite a bit so as to impress us more in the next trailer.

Elysium is set for release August 9.

In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

Somewhere between growing up on a steady diet of Saturday morning trips to the local comic-book shop, collecting an unhealthy amount of action figures, and frequent viewings of Ray Harryhausen and Hammer Horror films, came forth a nerdy boy that was torn between journalism and the arts. In high school, Michael found himself writing a movie column for the school newspaper. Yet, he went on to get a BFA in Studio Art at Webster University. When not writing about films, you can still find him discussing classic horror, collecting action figures, and reading Batman. Clearly, not much has changed.
