‘KILLING THEM SOFTLY’ May Have One of the Best Trailers of the Year
Andrew Dominik may not be a household name, but with his new film Killing Them Softly, he has surrounded himself with quite a few you will recognize. Brad Pitt, James Gandolfini, Ray Liotta, and Richard Jenkins all star as mobsters that get involved when a high stakes poker game gets overtaken by two dumb criminals one night. The film was originally titled Cogan’s Trade (it’s based on George V. Higgins’ 1974 Boston mobster novel Cogan’s Trade) and made a killing at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. Many claimed that it’s more political than you may think. With the line, “I’m living in America, and in America, you’re on your own,” I’m sure you can get an idea where the critics are coming from. The new trailer balances gritty violence at times with stunning slow-motion photography much like what Dominick previously did with The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Though I’m a little sick of Johnny Cash songs being overly used in films and trailers, I have to say that it didn’t bother me quite so much here. I only hope that the film winds up being as good as this phenomenal trailer.
Killing Them Softly opens Oct. 19.
