Astron-6 wants to make a giallo inspired film called ‘THE EDITOR’. Let’s Help!

Giallo is getting more spotlight as of late. First, there was Amer, arguably the most successful attempt of late to directly evoke the giallo era without leaving critics & fans alike with a bitter taste in their mouths. Berberian Sound Studio, while not necessarily fitting the format of a giallo, is almost certainly an homage to the era, in a way that is both loving and self-aware. Beyond the Black Rainbow stepped even further outside the traditional confines of giallo horror but clearly had strong roots in those films. A glut of giallo-influenced music has crawled from the internet woodwork, from a witch house tribute to Suspiria to a UK DJ performing a live electro score to Suspiria, not to mention the entire of electro DJ UMBERTO’s discography.

It was inevitable that someone would try to make a humorous spin on giallo. Which, from any angle, seems like an inevitable disaster. Except the group attempting it is the ONLY crew of filmmakers who could make it work. They’re called Astron6 and they’re funny as hell. Their biggest splash was a recently released Troma flick called Father’s Day. Describing it is nearly impossible; imagine Hobo With A Shotgun but more rebellious and tongue-in-cheek. Yes. MORE OF THAT. It’s a truly devoted grindhouse-wannabe that easily belongs in the best of Troma’s filmography, not to mention a highlight of the grindhouse revival. And then there’s Manborg, a film that not only manages to live up to that stupidly awesome but, in fact, deserves an even more brilliantly dumb title like MANBORG IN THE YEAR 20XX. It’s a sci-fi action film that has zero attention span and no rules. Also, no budget. But Astron6 has one superpower, and that’s the ability to turn small budget features into genuinely entertaining films. Manborg is no exception; if you remember anything about it afterwards, it won’t be the painfully obvious greenscreening and CG.

But Astron6 are more ambitious than all that. One of their short films, Heart of Karl, is a legitimately frightening and surprisingly thoughtful effort that demonstrates how genuinely talented Astron6 is. It’s work like this (and their feature films of course) that have convinced me to support their crowdfunding effort for their giallo comedy The Editor. Of course, that’s not all that’s convinced me.

Watch their pitch video for glimpses of work they already did on a previous rendition of The Editor.

What’s super exciting about it is the lack of CG and green screen. There’s a lot of tantalizing imagery in those morsels they throw out in the video, especially the immolation (do I detect a hint of Tombs of the Blind Dead?!) and, of course, obligatory menacing scissors.

So, GO HELP GET THE EDITOR MADE! There’s still some time left on that IndieGoGo clock but the bigger the numbers look early on, the more likely people are to donate. This is the kind of movie that’s practically MADE for the Late Nite Grindhouse scene, so let’s help get a film made just for our crowd!

Born and raised in the suburbs of Saint Louis, Missouri. Grew up on Ray Bradbury, Silver Surfer and Super Metroid. First introduced to horror when, instead of picking out a Super Nintendo game to rent from the local video shop, I wandered into the horror movie aisles. The cover of A Nightmare On Elm Street is forever imprinted on my brain, even though I didn't see the movie until I was much older. The first "scary" movie I ever saw was A Fire In The Sky. The abduction flashback gave me nightmares for months. I didn't develop a passion for horror films until I was old enough to drink and a friend introduced me to both craft beer and giallo films. From that point on, I was hooked. My favorite horror movies, to name a few, are DEMONS, FOUR FLIES ON GRAY VELVET, FROM BEYOND, BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW, etc. More at: http://about.me/cmelkus
