James Gunn May Lead the Marvel Team-Up ‘GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY’
One could say that Super first found director James Gunn (Slither) take on the world of caped crusaders even though I would argue that the film is more of a criminal vigilante film – in the vein of Taxi Driver – than what many of us typically think of as comic-book films. Even so, Gunn is certainly no stranger to the world of comic books. In an interview Andy I did with the enthusiastic director back in May of last year (you can read that HERE), the director/writer spoke briefly about his love of comic-books as well as some of his upcoming projects. One project that he certainly didn’t mention and would have probably never have guessed would be the possibility of directing a film for one of the biggest comic companies in the world: Marvel. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, James Gunn is considered the front-runner to helm the upcoming feature Guardians of the Galaxy. It goes without saying that this would be the biggest film for the director who up until now has mainly existed on the indie fringes. Gunn worked his way up from the Troma trenches to writing scripts for the highly successful Scooby-Doo franchise and the remake of Dawn of the Dead to directing one of my favorite horror comedies of all time: Slither. His skill at combining action and comedy seems to fit in the Marvel mold that was first formed with Jon Favreau and later perfected with Joss Whedon. Being such a fan of the director on a film level and a personal level, I could not be more happy for the guy if this does indeed come to fruition. Since this is still considered to be in the negotiation stage, we will let you know for sure when the news arrives. The weird and diverse group consisting of Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Gamora, Star-Lord, and Drax the Destroyer are set to hit theaters as the Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014.
