The ‘World War Z’ Trailer Doesn’t Look as Bad as I Expected

One thing worth noting right off the bat is that this is in no way Max Brooks’ World War Z.  There really wouldn’t be a simple way to adapt Brooks’ acclaimed novel.  It would take a budget that’s through the roof and a writer and a director who wouldn’t be afraid to tackle the multi-story arc that the book explores.  Essentially, World War Z is a collection of interviews and testimonies from everyone from doctors to little children to politicians – just to name a few – that describe in chronological order how this event occurred.  We are treated to stories prior to the event, during the event, and after.  It’s a hauntingly realistic read that in way resembles this trailer that just got released.  Even said that, Marc Forester’s World War Z doesn’t look horrendous.  Turmoil from behind the scenes will no doubt tarnish this film for critics, however there is a lot of great scenes in here worth applauding.  If you forget that it stems from a far superior book, you might enjoy some of it.  Well . . . until it gets to the piles of I Am Legend CGI zombies.  And like how that film was a centerpiece for Will Smith, so too does Z look like just a vehicle for Brad Pitt to be the star of the show.  World War Z comes out June 21, 2013.

Somewhere between growing up on a steady diet of Saturday morning trips to the local comic-book shop, collecting an unhealthy amount of action figures, and frequent viewings of Ray Harryhausen and Hammer Horror films, came forth a nerdy boy that was torn between journalism and the arts. In high school, Michael found himself writing a movie column for the school newspaper. Yet, he went on to get a BFA in Studio Art at Webster University. When not writing about films, you can still find him discussing classic horror, collecting action figures, and reading Batman. Clearly, not much has changed.
