‘THE MUMMY’ Will Be Reawakened for Yet Another Reboot

The Universal and Hammer Film’s productions of The Mummy had a classy and serious take on the idea of an ancient spirit being disturbed by greedy grave robbers.  One can not say the same for the handling of the 1999 reboot.  Well, as the story of The Mummy proves: the dead can be restless.  Never more does this ring more true than with the film executives at Universal.  Even though you could say that the franchise was abandoned after 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emporor, I hardly thought it was dead and buried.  Universal seemed to think so.  As a result they are moving forward with a new reboot with the help of Prometheus co-writer Jon Spaihts.  They must really like what they see (or hear from people) from his script for the anticpated film since the only other credit for the guy is last year’s bomb The Darkest Hour.  Judging by his comments – which you can read below – it seems the writer and the studio are going to abandon the Indiana Jones family fun vibe for a much darker tone.  This is all well and good in my book.  Considering we have had a wealth of vampires and zombies running rampant in theaters and on TV recently, I gladly welcome something of a different beast to torment cinemagoers. Read Spaihts comments below.

“I see it as the sort of opportunity I had with PROMETHEUS: to go back to a franchise’s roots in dark, scary source material, and simultaneously open it up to an epic scale we haven’t seen before.

Somewhere between growing up on a steady diet of Saturday morning trips to the local comic-book shop, collecting an unhealthy amount of action figures, and frequent viewings of Ray Harryhausen and Hammer Horror films, came forth a nerdy boy that was torn between journalism and the arts. In high school, Michael found himself writing a movie column for the school newspaper. Yet, he went on to get a BFA in Studio Art at Webster University. When not writing about films, you can still find him discussing classic horror, collecting action figures, and reading Batman. Clearly, not much has changed.
