It’s official: we will see Ridley Scott tackle another entry in his sci-fi/horror series that originally began with Alien. Fox confirms to The Hollywood Reporter that Scott and the studio are pushing ahead with a follow-up. Two of the stars of Prometheus, Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace, had already signed on to do a sequel. Unfortunately for fans of the “quasi-Alien-prequel,” writer Damon Lindelof may not be available to pen the sequel. Rumors began circulating though whether the planned new franchise for FOX was even going to continue with mixed reactions from critics and fanboys and a lukewarm response at the Box-office. The religious heavy and thought-provoking film did manage to make $302 million worldwide even if it only made $125 million domestically (on a budget of $130 mil.). To compare those numbers to another film that isn’t considered a mega-hit, Snow White and the Huntsmen still managed to beat that by raking in $386 mil. worldwide and $153 domestically. Rotten Tomatoes has Prometheus at a 73% approval rating currently even though it seems like there has been a lot of negative rants among bloggers against the film since its opening. I know that Andy and I can surely attest we both loved the film and went back to see it more than once. For a major studio film, it’s a highly ambitious piece of cinema that I’m sure will only pique my interest even more after multiple viewings. Needless to say, I’m happy that FOX and Ridley Scott are moving forward with the sequel even though it saddens me to hear that Lindelof may not be involved.
