Diablo Cody is Producing a Zombie Movie with Gordon-Levitt and Johansson!?

If you are anything like me, you most likely are asking yourself … How have I not heard about this before? So far, I have loved everything Joesph Gordon-Levitt has done, Scarlett Johansson might be my biggest celebrity crush (though her acting skills are sub-par), Diablo Cody is an interesting writer (though a little over-rated), and than there are zombies … enough said. Cody is producing a “zombie love story” entitled Breathers: A Zombie Lament, and Scarlett Johansson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are rumored to be filling the title roles. If any of the above names incites a spark of curiosity in you, you might want to continue reading for more info on the project.

The folks over at Joblo posted the news about this upcoming zombie project.  Based on a 2009 book by S.G. Browne, Breathers tells the story of a boy named Andy who becomes a re-animated zombie and than forced to live in his parents wine cellar.  In the society where the book takes place, zombies are not given human rights and reach out towards other zombies through support groups.  Andy’s life dramatically changes when he meets suicide victim (now zombie) Rita.  Though bordering more on the comedic side, Breathers does offer a healthy amount of blood and gore for horror readers.  Although the whole zombie comedy schtick has been used (and misused) a lot these days, this project is something that I am curious about seeing if only for the talent that is rumored to be involved in it.  Does it sound too much like a Fido meets Wristcutters rip-off?  Do you love or hate Diablo Cody?  What are your thoughts on the current state of the zombie genre?  Leave your thoughts and comments in the talk-back below.

Somewhere between growing up on a steady diet of Saturday morning trips to the local comic-book shop, collecting an unhealthy amount of action figures, and frequent viewings of Ray Harryhausen and Hammer Horror films, came forth a nerdy boy that was torn between journalism and the arts. In high school, Michael found himself writing a movie column for the school newspaper. Yet, he went on to get a BFA in Studio Art at Webster University. When not writing about films, you can still find him discussing classic horror, collecting action figures, and reading Batman. Clearly, not much has changed.
