A Child Killing Demon is Revealed in the First Trailer for ‘SINISTER’

I’m going to try to forget that Scott Derrickson is responsible for The Day the Earth Stood Still remake and focus on the fact that he gave horror fans a pleasant surprise with the court-room drama turned thriller The Exorcism of Emily Rose.  With his new film, Sinister, the writer and director will team up with Ain’t it Cool News contributor C. Robert Cargill – who writes for the site under the name Massawyrm – to give us a creepy story revolving around a crime writer, his family, and a child-killing demon who seems to be connected to the the previous occupants of their home.  The trailer obviously throws in a number of effective scares including the demon’s face appearing in and out of frame.  Even though it’s clearly used for marketing purposes, I’m getting a little sick of seeing the tired tagline of “From the (blah blah blah) of Paranormal Activity.” If you can look past that over-used statement, the trailer looks quite promising and shows Ethan Hawke conveying a very real sense of fright in many sequences.  Sinister premiered at the SXSW Film Festival earlier this year to mainly positive reviews.  The rest of us will have to see for ourselves when it heads to theaters on October 5.  Watch the new trailer below.

Somewhere between growing up on a steady diet of Saturday morning trips to the local comic-book shop, collecting an unhealthy amount of action figures, and frequent viewings of Ray Harryhausen and Hammer Horror films, came forth a nerdy boy that was torn between journalism and the arts. In high school, Michael found himself writing a movie column for the school newspaper. Yet, he went on to get a BFA in Studio Art at Webster University. When not writing about films, you can still find him discussing classic horror, collecting action figures, and reading Batman. Clearly, not much has changed.
