THE THING Prequel/Sequel/Remake Trailer

The Thing trailer has been unleashed.  Universal Pictures will be bringing the “prequel” to theatres on October 14, 2011.  The director, Matthijs van Heijningen Jr., is definitely a fan of both films and let us not forget that Carpenter’s masterpiece was a remake.  Do I think this one will be a masterpiece, it could have been but after watching the trailer, I just see too many nods/ripoffs of Carpenter’s film.  You judge for yourself.  The film stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton.

Before I leave you with just the trailer, I want to put my own two cents in. I’m never against remakes. I think the idea of remakes are essentially examples of how creatively bankrupt the film industry is getting, but sometimes a remake is good. The majority of the time, they are bad. While Universal is billing this as a prequel, the trailer really looks like it took a lot of it from Carpenter’s film, which is disheartening. The source material is outer there and there is still things that could be adapted, but instead, Hollywood went with a safe bet. I really hope that this film is good because I love anything THING related.

To quote MacCready, “Why don’t we just wait here for a little while… see what happens…”
