The Sounds of Beauty and Horror in BLACK SWAN

Black Swan marks the third collaboration between director Darren Aronofsky and Craig Henighan.  Sound Designer, Craig Henighan, has been doing an amazing job providing Darren Aronofsky with subtle sounds or blaring effects since the director’s second film, Requiem For a Dream.  With the slightest sound cue, Henighan can change the entire tone of a scene and help create the mood for Aronofsky’s striking visuals.  These ideas are the subject of a new eight minute featurette on Black Swan’s Sound Designer, Sound Re-recording Mixer, and Supervising Sound Editor.  Beyond the break you can watch the interesting process Henighan went through to create many sound elements that we sometimes overlook.

Rope of Silicon posted the eight minute “Soundworks Collection” segment which you can watch below.  BE WARNED! The interview does show some scenes and footage from the film that may be revealing for those who have not seen it.  For those who have seen the amazingness which is Black Swan . . . I say, swan-dive right in!

Somewhere between growing up on a steady diet of Saturday morning trips to the local comic-book shop, collecting an unhealthy amount of action figures, and frequent viewings of Ray Harryhausen and Hammer Horror films, came forth a nerdy boy that was torn between journalism and the arts. In high school, Michael found himself writing a movie column for the school newspaper. Yet, he went on to get a BFA in Studio Art at Webster University. When not writing about films, you can still find him discussing classic horror, collecting action figures, and reading Batman. Clearly, not much has changed.
