THE CRAZIES Director is Under the Spell of a Hollywood Witch

Witchcraft has cast another Hollywood spell.  First there was Nic Cage and his terrible wig in Season of the Witch.  Then there will be Rob Zombie’s modern Witches of Salem.  This will then be followed by the recently buzzed about Jeremy Renner starring Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. Well … it seems another film is being boiled up in the movie-making cauldron.  Deadline is reporting that Breck Eisner, director of last year’s well received Crazies remake, is set to direct a new project entitled The Last Witch Hunter. Find out more about the plot of this developing film after the break.

One can’t help but think Summit Entertainment is trying to ride the coat tails of last year’s successful The Last Exorcism with its similar sounding title. Besides Eisner at the helm, it is being reported that Russian director Timur Bekmambetov (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) will be producing the film as well. The plot of The Last Witch Hunter follows one of the last remaining witch hunters, a breed that keeps the population of witches and warlocks in check. They are about to repopulate in a major way unless he can stop them.

Though I feel Eisner has a keen eye for action and the skill to craft some well executed tension, I wasn’t as crazy for his remake of The Crazies as everyone else seemed to be.  Hopefully with a decent script, this film will be able cast a spell over me.

Somewhere between growing up on a steady diet of Saturday morning trips to the local comic-book shop, collecting an unhealthy amount of action figures, and frequent viewings of Ray Harryhausen and Hammer Horror films, came forth a nerdy boy that was torn between journalism and the arts. In high school, Michael found himself writing a movie column for the school newspaper. Yet, he went on to get a BFA in Studio Art at Webster University. When not writing about films, you can still find him discussing classic horror, collecting action figures, and reading Batman. Clearly, not much has changed.
