‘STAR WARS REBELS’ Animated Show Coming Next Year

Those still mourning the loss of the exceptional animated Clone Wars TV show may find solace in knowing that a new animated Star Wars series is on the way.  After delivering five smart and exciting seasons, the team behind Star Wars: The Clone Wars will move on to Star Wars Rebels.  The series is set to begin airing next year and will bridge the gap between the recent prequels and the original trilogy.  Dave Filoni (who I was hoping would take over the new trilogy), Greg Weisman, and Simon Kinberg  (who was rumored to be working on one of the live-action Star Wars projects) will lead the animated series which will air on Disney XD following a one hour premiere on Disney.  It’s being reported that Star Wars Rebels takes place in a time where the Empire is securing its grip on the galaxy and hunting down the last of the Jedi Knights as a fledgling rebellion against the Empire is taking shape.  The combination of the team behind the show and the story they will be focusing on certainly has my attention.  Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, had this to say about the show.

“I couldn’t be more excited to explore new corners of the Star Wars universe. . . I think Star Wars Rebels will capture the look, feel and fun that both kids and their parents love about Star Wars.”

Somewhere between growing up on a steady diet of Saturday morning trips to the local comic-book shop, collecting an unhealthy amount of action figures, and frequent viewings of Ray Harryhausen and Hammer Horror films, came forth a nerdy boy that was torn between journalism and the arts. In high school, Michael found himself writing a movie column for the school newspaper. Yet, he went on to get a BFA in Studio Art at Webster University. When not writing about films, you can still find him discussing classic horror, collecting action figures, and reading Batman. Clearly, not much has changed.
