Read What Eli Roth Has To Say About Ti West’s ‘THE SACRAMENT’

A film that seems to have snuck in without anyone really anticipating it is Ti West’s new horror film The Sacrament.  For the longest time I was under the impression that West was going to move straight into his recently announced sci-fi flick starring Liv Tyler entitled The Side Effect.  Yet, somehow in the middle of throwing together two shorts for V/H/S and The ABC’s of Death (the later of which looks to have literally been thrown together in a few hours), doing press for The Innkeepers, and beginning pre-production on The Side Effect, the young horror director has collaborated with another known horror director you may have heard of: Eli Roth.  As of late, Roth has produced a number of horror projects including the upcoming feature Clown, the Netflix series Hemlock Grove, and this week’s release of The Last Exorcism Part 2.  Of the projects the director turned producer has his hands in The Sacrament is the one I’m most looking forward to.  I’ve been a vocal supporter of Ti West’s and am now even more excited for the film after reading these new comments that have come to light.

In a Q+A session with The Guardian, Roth reveals the plot of The Sacrament which has been kept under wraps up until now.

I’m now producing a film called The Sacrament that Ti West produced and directed. He made a terrific film called House of the Devil, and had a great idea about a found footage docu-style horror movie set in a Jonestown type cult where we watch a mass suicide begin and the film makers are trapped inside. It’s really, really scary.

I’m sold.  Even if the names of West and Roth weren’t attached I would be looking forward to this based on the subject alone.  Martha Marcy May Marlene, a film from a few years ago that dabbled in the subject of cult like groups was one of my favorites of 2011, and I was almost as equally impressed with last year’s Sound of my Voice – a film that also follows two documentarians who infiltrate a cult group led by a supposed leader from the future.  Needless to say, cults are fascinating and terrifying to me.  What are your thoughts on the plot?

Somewhere between growing up on a steady diet of Saturday morning trips to the local comic-book shop, collecting an unhealthy amount of action figures, and frequent viewings of Ray Harryhausen and Hammer Horror films, came forth a nerdy boy that was torn between journalism and the arts. In high school, Michael found himself writing a movie column for the school newspaper. Yet, he went on to get a BFA in Studio Art at Webster University. When not writing about films, you can still find him discussing classic horror, collecting action figures, and reading Batman. Clearly, not much has changed.
