‘PRIMER’ Director’s Follow-up ‘UPSTREAM COLOR’ Hits Blu-ray on May 7

One film that I have been anxiously awaiting for since the beginning of the year is Shane Carruth’s second feature Upstream Color.  The Sundance Film Festival debuted the film earlier this year with reactions ranging from loud praise to bewilderment.  It was easily the most talked about film at the festival and continued to garner attention at SXSW and its limited theatrical run that followed. Whether it ends up being a baffling mess or a brilliant passion project, I’m still excited to see what the director of Primer has been up to.

No bonus features have been announced for the disc – even though it gets released in less than a week – but we do have the artwork for the Blu-ray and DVD Combo Pack.

A woman (Amy Seimetz) is abducted and hypnotized with an organic material harvested from a specific flower. When she falls for a man (Carruth), the two come to realize he may also have been subjected to the same process. They search urgently for a place of safety within each other and struggle to assemble the fragments of their wrecked lives, unknowingly drawn into the life cycle of a presence that permeates the microscopic world.

Somewhere between growing up on a steady diet of Saturday morning trips to the local comic-book shop, collecting an unhealthy amount of action figures, and frequent viewings of Ray Harryhausen and Hammer Horror films, came forth a nerdy boy that was torn between journalism and the arts. In high school, Michael found himself writing a movie column for the school newspaper. Yet, he went on to get a BFA in Studio Art at Webster University. When not writing about films, you can still find him discussing classic horror, collecting action figures, and reading Batman. Clearly, not much has changed.
