Paramount Reworking Script for SERIAL KILLER DAYS

There is a novel by David Prills called Serial Killer Days, which is  about a town in Minnesota that celebrates the return of serial killers by throwing an annual parade. Paramount has purchased the rights to make the film and is getting ready to begin production soon.

Thank You For Smoking producer Dan Dubiecki along with Mark Carter, have put together a script that landed on the 2008 Black List. Paramount reacted to the initial script stating that it was too similiar to Scream orDisturbia which is why they blacklisted it. So, Mark Carter plans on rewriting a script better suited to separate the film from just a teenage dark comedy horror.

It’s going to be hard though because here is what goes on in the novel as described by Amazon:

David Prill mocks society’s love for big-name criminals with a story about a small town in Minnesota where an annual visit (and murder) by a serial killer has become a hilarious tourist attraction–complete with floats in a “Parade of Fear,” fake blood running in the streets, inflatable weapons hanging from lamp posts, and a contest to choose the new “Scream Queen.” Also, it’s an effective coming-of-age portrait of a teen named Debbie Sue, who is charmingly distressed about her inability to be frightened.

Sounds like a blast and I’m already putting it in my shopping cart. I think it sounds a little closer to Scream than Disturbia, especially with the female lead but there is one key difference. The main character Debbie seems to be the complete opposite of Sidney Prescott. She doesn’t seem like your normal naive 18 year old which  makes me wonder who will play her part. As more news circulates on this we will keep you up to date. Hopefully before then I will have a book review for you.
