Karl Urban Discusses the Character and Themes of ‘DREDD 3D’ in New Video

Judge Dredd is finally getting another shot at a faithful film adaptation with Dredd 3D.  Apart from Sylvester Stallone being replaced by Karl Urban, another major change that will distinguish this film from the 90’s disaster is the fact that the title character will remain hidden under his iconic helmet.  That is one major difference, another one might be that the early buzz behind the film is that it is a ton of ultra-gory fun.  In a new interview with IGN, Urban discusses the mystery behind the character that’s hidden under the mask along with some other juicy tidbits.  Andy and I will be checking out the film at this year’s Fantastic Fest in a little over a week and this is one of the films that I’m most excited about seeing.  Check out the interview with the New Zealander below.  Dredd 3D opens in theaters on September 21.

The future America is an irradiated waste land. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner.  Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge.

Somewhere between growing up on a steady diet of Saturday morning trips to the local comic-book shop, collecting an unhealthy amount of action figures, and frequent viewings of Ray Harryhausen and Hammer Horror films, came forth a nerdy boy that was torn between journalism and the arts. In high school, Michael found himself writing a movie column for the school newspaper. Yet, he went on to get a BFA in Studio Art at Webster University. When not writing about films, you can still find him discussing classic horror, collecting action figures, and reading Batman. Clearly, not much has changed.
