Jim Carrey Publicly Denounces ‘KICK-ASS 2’

I dug Kick-Ass and I am still looking forward to Kick-Ass 2 even if it looks like a lower budgeted film or might not have some of that CG polish that the first one had. I dug Kick-Ass because it was an unapologetic comic book film in respect to its violence. I also realize how bold it was to tackle on the subject matter of a pre-teenage girl named Hit-Girl to shoot guns and chop down bad guys. However, since the tone was in a comic-book fashion, it worked.

It seems like even someone involved in the production has their issues with some of the violence contained within the film. That person is Jim Carrey. Last night, Carrey took to his Twitter to publicly denounce the film.

I did Kickass a month b4 Sandy Hook and now in all good conscience I cannot support that level of violence. My apologies to e

I meant to say my apologies to others involve with the film. I am not ashamed of it but recent events have caused a change in my heart.

This is a shame as I think everyone can agree that Carrey, with all do respect to everyone else involved, was a highlight of the trailers. Just watch what we can see of his performance below:

It seems like Carrey’s decision to denounce the film is possibly because he is under fire from family groups or the topic was brought up to him recently. If I was in his position, I would use the press rounds in the promotion of the film to explain why he took on the role as it only seems to bother him when a national event like Sandy Hook happens. Like the comic’s creator Mark Millar points out below, the violence was in the script when he accepted the role. You can read some of what Millar stated on his website below:

baffled by this sudden announcement as nothing seen in this picture wasn’t in the screenplay eighteen months ago. Yes, the body-count is very high, but a movie called Kick-Ass 2 really has to do what it says on the tin. A sequel to the picture that gave us HIT-GIRL was always going to have some blood on the floor and this should have been no shock to a guy who enjoyed the first movie so much… This is fiction and like Tarantino and Peckinpah, Scorcese [sic] and Eastwood, John Boorman, Oliver Stone and Chan-Wook Park, Kick-Ass avoids the usual bloodless body-count of most big summer pictures and focuses instead of the CONSEQUENCES of violence… Our job as storytellers is to entertain and our toolbox can’t be sabotaged by curtailing the use of guns in an action-movie.

Either way he likes it, we will see Carrey as Colonel Stars and Stripes in Kick-Ass 2 when it hits theaters August 16.
