DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK Promises a lot of Atmosphere in New Trailer

Though very little is known about this movie up – other than it being a remake – until now, I doubt one will be able to figure out much more after watching this teaser trailer.  The trailer doesn’t outline much of the story but showcases some great visuals (even if they are shrouded in darkness).  Filled with creepy voices, billowing sheets, an old mansion, and slithering creatures, the trailer does exude an atmosphere that is specific to most of Guillermo Del Toro’s films (Pan’s Labyrinth, The Devil’s Backbone, Hellboy).  Even though he is not sitting in the director’s chair, Del Toro is producing  and wrote this creepy film which is being released by Miramax early next year.  Based loosely on a 1973 T.V. show of the same name, the film tells the story of a young girl who recently moves into an old 19th century mansion with her father and new girlfriend.  Once there, the lonely girl discovers a hidden basement that unleashes a race of evil creatures that want to consume her.  The movie stars Katie Holmes, Guy Pearce, and Bailee Madison.

Here’s hoping that this little film delivers all the thrills and chills that the trailer just briefly hints at.

Editor’s Note – DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK is a remake of a TV film which is available via Warner Archive.

Somewhere between growing up on a steady diet of Saturday morning trips to the local comic-book shop, collecting an unhealthy amount of action figures, and frequent viewings of Ray Harryhausen and Hammer Horror films, came forth a nerdy boy that was torn between journalism and the arts. In high school, Michael found himself writing a movie column for the school newspaper. Yet, he went on to get a BFA in Studio Art at Webster University. When not writing about films, you can still find him discussing classic horror, collecting action figures, and reading Batman. Clearly, not much has changed.
