Benicio Del Toro Says “No Khan Do” for ‘STAR TREK 2’

Okay . . . Del Toro didn’t officially say that, but in my geek world that is how he exited this project.  Yet. more on that in a moment.  Let’s backtrack for a second to get everyone caught up to speed. Trekkies and Abrams’ fans alike have been creating quite a ruckus this past week with all of the rumors regarding Star Trek 2. First we heard that Benicio Del Toro would star as the villain. Then we heard he will be portraying the infamous villain Khan.  Now it seems the facts have come forth and news can finally be reported.  Though not always the case, the rumors for the highly anticipated sequel were all true. Yes, Del Toro was scheduled to be in the film.  Yes, he was planning on portraying Khan.  However, now he is not.  Vulture got word that,

“Benicio Del Toro, who entered into talks last month to play the sequel’s new villain. Insiders tell Vulture that the deal actually went asunder last Wednesday after parties couldn’t come to terms over monetary issues.”

Even though the talented actor has left the project, it is still being reported that Khan will still be in the sequel.  So who will portray the superhuman tyrant in J.J. Abrams return to space? I guess we will have to wait and see what stars will come forth.

Somewhere between growing up on a steady diet of Saturday morning trips to the local comic-book shop, collecting an unhealthy amount of action figures, and frequent viewings of Ray Harryhausen and Hammer Horror films, came forth a nerdy boy that was torn between journalism and the arts. In high school, Michael found himself writing a movie column for the school newspaper. Yet, he went on to get a BFA in Studio Art at Webster University. When not writing about films, you can still find him discussing classic horror, collecting action figures, and reading Batman. Clearly, not much has changed.
