Alexandre Aja gives us a modern day Flash Gordon character

Though Alexandre Aja unfortunately gave us the horrendous mess that is Mirrors, thankfully that was the only major bump in an otherwise great career.  High Tension gave us a gory slash and stalk that gave real meaning to its title.  The Hills Have Eyes is quite possibly the best remake of a classic that many believe improved on the original.  Then there is Piranha 3D.  Which I think most horror fans unanimously praised last year.  Now the french director is about to give us a modern day Flash Gordon, Han Solo, and Snake Plissken character all rolled into one.  Get you first look at the poster for Cobra: The Space Pirate after the break.

Currently filming in France, Cobra: The Space Pirate is Aja’s new film based on Terasawa Buichi’s late 70’s / early 80’s manga series.  Check out the poster below. According to Wikipedia:

The series follows the adventures of a man known as Cobra, who lived an ordinary life until his enemies began to hunt him down. Cobra surgically alters his face and erases his own memory to hide from his enemies. Cobra gradually regains his memories and unites with his old partner Lady Armaroid and his ship Tortuga. Later in his adventures, Cobra meets the Royal sisters whose map-tattoos lead to treasure.

Somewhere between growing up on a steady diet of Saturday morning trips to the local comic-book shop, collecting an unhealthy amount of action figures, and frequent viewings of Ray Harryhausen and Hammer Horror films, came forth a nerdy boy that was torn between journalism and the arts. In high school, Michael found himself writing a movie column for the school newspaper. Yet, he went on to get a BFA in Studio Art at Webster University. When not writing about films, you can still find him discussing classic horror, collecting action figures, and reading Batman. Clearly, not much has changed.
