Some of you may be asking why is this a pick of the week. While I felt the film was a very mixed bag, there are elements of solid material here. The girls in the film are solid and at times the scares work. There is enough in this film that is worth a watch. We know the original short is on this release along with a commentary and some featurettes. However, we didn’t receive a copy for review so we are unable to tell you the length of said featurettes.

Guillermo del Toro, the Academy Award-nominated writer of Pan’s Labyrinth, presents this supernatural thriller that tells the haunting tale of two little girls who disappeared into the woods the day that their parents were killed. When the young sisters are found alive in a decrepit cabin, their uncle (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Game of Thrones) and his girlfriend (Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain, Zero Dark Thirty) take them in. As they try to introduce the children to a normal life, Annabel (Chastain) begins to wonder if the traumatized girls are the only guests they have welcomed into their home.

I am so happy this film is on Blu-Ray as I was a huge fan of this film. If you have never seen it, it is worth a look!

Robin Williams delivers his ‘finest hour’ (USA TODAY) in ‘one of the most absorbing, effective thrillers in years’ (NBC-TV). Sy ‘the photo guy’ Parrish (Williams) has lovingly developed photos for the Yorkin family since their son was a baby. But as the Yorkins’ lives become fuller, Sy’s only seems lonelier, until he eventually believes he’s part of their family. When ‘Uncle’ Sy’s picture-perfect fantasy collides with an ugly dose of reality, what happens next ‘has the spine-tingling elements of the best psychological thrillers!’ (THE NEW YORK OBSERVER)

Shane Carruth’s Primer made such an impact in the independent film world as well as the genre of heady sci-fi that his latest film, Upstream Color, will grab the attention of those interested in the genre. While the option to purchase the film sight unseen – unless you were lucky enough to see it at Sundance or SXSW – might be off putting for some, I have been told that the experience is worth it.

A woman (Amy Seimetz) is abducted and hypnotized with an organic material harvested from a specific flower. When she falls for a man (Carruth), the two come to realize he may also have been subjected to the same process. They search urgently for a place of safety within each other and struggle to assemble the fragments of their wrecked lives, unknowingly drawn into the life cycle of a presence that permeates the microscopic world.

Andy Triefenbach is the Editor-in-Chief and owner of DestroytheBrain.com. In addition to his role on the site, he also programs St. Louis' monthly horror & exploitation theatrical midnight program, Late Nite Grindhouse. Coming from a household of a sci-fi father and a horror/supernatural loving mother, Andy's path to loving genre film was clear. He misses VHS and his personal Saturday night 6 tape movie marathons from his youth.
