[Yuletide Terrors] Day 24: SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT 5: THE TOYMAKER

Throughout the month of December, we will be highlighting a film a day that has some tie into the holiday somehow. Some titles will be obvious, others won’t be. Some films will be good and, again, others won’t be. However, we think all titles are worth your time whether to give you chills inside your home or to make you drink more eggnog until you puke laughing.

Late one night young Derek (William Thorne) awakes to someone knocking at the front door. A present left on the porch ends up strangling his dad. Derek has gone into shock and won’t speak. His mom Sarah (Jane Higginson) hopes maybe a toy will cheer him up. They go to the toy store owned by Joe Petto (Mickey Rooney) and his son Pino (Brian Bremer). Old Joe has got some weird toys, like Larry the Larvae. Noah (Tracy Fraim) has been following Sarah and Derek even giving Derek gifts. Why is this man seemingly stalking them, who’s building these killer toys, and does Pino ever blink?

Yeah, that’s right. I just skipped three sequels. I felt liked watching the Silent Night, Deadly Night series and remake was too easy. Because there are so many Christmas Horror movies I wanted to talk about lesser known ones. Why the fourth sequel? Because it’s my favorite one, duh. Pretty much every male in this film is a creep. Mickey Rooney, Brian Bremer (who was also in Society), Tracy Fraim’s character and even Clint Howard reprises his role from part 4 The Initiation to creep it up in a cameo. All of them spy on Derek and Sarah at different points. I don’t want to ruin just how bizarre this gets, trust me it’s one worth watching.

After the third entry Brian Yuzna took over the franchise. He thankfully dropped brother Ricky and went in a new direction. He directed part 4 but only co-wrote and produced The Toymaker. No offense to director Martin Kitrosser, but this is a Yuzna film to the bone. He even brought his buddy, Screaming Mad George along to provide special effects.

Silent Night, Deadly Night 3, 4 and 5 were pretty much ignored on DVD until 2009. Lionsgate put out a triple feature but the titles were in fullscreen without any extras. And it is out of print. Oddly part 3 was released with three other totally unrelated movies. Still in fullscreen. Maybe someone will give these titles the appreciation they deserve one day.
