Sarah’s Best of 2014!

Throughout the week, we will be highlighting each of our contributor’s “Best of 2014” on an individual basis. This isn’t limited to movies & television either. No, no, this bleeds over into memorabilia, music and so much more. Without further ado…

The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1

Look, I’ve read all of the Hunger Games books and it’s pretty obvious that Suzanne Collins didn’t even want to write a third book. That being said, Director Francis Lawrence makes you feel like they wanted to make this movie. In the grand tradition of all YA novels, Mockingjay is being split into two parts for the final movies. However, this first half of the two-part movie feels well-paced and action packed. There were a few moments where I felt some scenes could’ve been slightly shorter, but overall I felt entertained and engaged throughout the film. I can’t wait to see part two in theatres next year!

Doctor Who series 8

Not going to lie, since Steven Moffat took over as head writer of Dr. Who, I’ve slowly been losing interest in the show. I know for many people it’s the exact opposite, but I feel as though his writing never takes any real risks. To sum it up quickly my main issue is this: we have nothing to fear. All of his characters turn out fine for the most part in the end. I was pretty hesitant going into a new series with a brand new Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and sort of expected the worst. I was pleasantly surprised not just by Capaldi’s acting but by the writing. It seems to have gotten much better this season and there’s more compelling and interesting story lines. Sure there’s still some groaners (Kill the Moon, anyone?) but overall I quite enjoyed this season. I’m so ready for the Christmas special!

Orphan Black season two

If you aren’t watching this super awesome BBC America Sci-Fi series, do so. I mean, right now. This show is groundbreaking, well-scripted, and chockfull of talented performances. I mean, Tatiana Maslany is one of the best actresses on screen right now, that’s a fact. I’m not going to get too detailed because it’s one of those series that you’ve just got to watch, but there’s a lot of mystery, science, and intrigue to keep any Sci-Fi nerd invested.
