Something Andy and I have long discussed is the possibility of having posters for the Late Nite Grindhouse shows each month.  Turning around a new and exciting image each month though would be almost as hard as attaining some of the rare 35mm prints Andy searches for each month.  Not to mention trying to gauge an audience’s interest in a particular film to justify printing and the time spent designing  may not always pay off.  But when it was announced that our June show was going to be Re-Animator, I knew this was going to be the best oppurtunity to offer our amazing followers something special.  I’m very pleased and proud to announce that I designed a limited edition print that will be for sale on June 7 & 8.  With the help of fellow artist and Late Nite Grindhouse attendee Tom Cline, we were able to silk-screen a run of 50 prints that will be for sale during the show.  Once those 50 are gone there are NO MORE.  As this article is being written, the screens we used for printing have already been destroyed.  So that attendees on both Friday and Saturday night have an equal chance to purchase one, we are setting aside 25 prints for each night to be fair.  If we have some left over from Friday night’s show those will be added to the pile on sale for Saturday.  Each two color screen print (the white paper makes it three colors technically speaking) will be numbered and signed individually.  The image is printed on an acid-free, cotton, heavy weight, print paper and measures at 14×20 with a print area of 13×19.  These prints will be sold for $20 each, and we will accept either cash or credit – sorry, no checks.  I’m a HUGE fan of Re-Animator and so it brought me great joy to design this with one of the most iconic scenes in the film serving as my inspiration – with my own personal twist on it.  I hope you guys like it.  If this goes well, hopefully you will see more posters for some of the bigger known titles we have lined up in the future.  Below you will find the full image (prior to being numbered, signed, and trimmed) along with a few close-ups.  Late Nite Grindhouse is such a special and unique program to be featured in St. Louis and I hope that this is just another element that excites fans to come each and every month.  Hope to see you all in two weeks at the Hi-Pointe Theatre for a rare 35mm screening of Re-Animator!

Other Releases this Week

There’s an easy cool to Josh Homme and the music he writes with his band Queens of the Stone Age.  Like Marlon Brando in The Wild One when asked “what are you rebelling against” -  “Whadda you got?” – the music of QOTSA just drips with sweat, gasoline, attitude, and … well… coolness.  Their new album …Like Clockwork will be released on June 4, but don’t let the title fool you.  Apparently the new album didn’t go as planned and wasn’t such an easy journey.  Then again, I don’t think Brando knew what he was getting himself into when he stopped into that small town bar in The Wild One.  For what it’s worth, the new album is now completed and features a number of guest stars including Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner, Dave Grohl, Elton John, Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor, and Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters.  Fans of the band also know that this album sees original bassist Nick Oliveri returning to the line-up.  Front-man Josh Homme previously described the new album as “waking up in the middle of nowhere.”  That feeling of scared isolation and having to fight to survive can be felt in the new 15 minute video featuring five songs from their new album.  Bloodied and bandaged figures, highway chases, and bar fights litter this stream of conscious video made up of artwork by Boneface (animated by Liam Brazier).  It’s a wild video that features new songs ‘I Appear Missing’, ‘Kalopsia’, ‘Keep Your Eyes Peeled’, ‘If I Had A Tail’, and concluding with their new single ‘My God Is The Sun.’  …Like Clockwork will be released on June 4.

J.R.R. Tolkien once wrote that “not all who wander are lost.”  I think it’s safe to assume though that the men in Ben Wheatley’s new film are indeed lost in more ways than once.  A Field in England looks to be a hallucinogenic, historical, road trip of sorts from the director who previously gave us Kill List and the recently streaming Sightseers.  Between the stark black and white photography and images of dirty, brawny warriors losing their mind, I couldn’t help but draw comparisons to Nicolas Winding Refn’s Valhalla Rising.  Given the man behind the camera, I’m still curious about A Field In England, even though I get the sense I’ve tasted these psychedelic mushrooms before.  Drafthouse Pictures will release the film in the states later this year. Those still mourning the loss of the exceptional animated Clone Wars TV show may find solace in knowing that a new animated Star Wars series is on the way.  After delivering five smart and exciting seasons, the team behind Star Wars: The Clone Wars will move on to Star Wars Rebels.  The series is set to begin airing next year and will bridge the gap between the recent prequels and the original trilogy.  Dave Filoni (who I was hoping would take over the new trilogy), Greg Weisman, and Simon Kinberg  (who was rumored to be working on one of the live-action Star Wars projects) will lead the animated series which will air on Disney XD following a one hour premiere on Disney.  It’s being reported that Star Wars Rebels takes place in a time where the Empire is securing its grip on the galaxy and hunting down the last of the Jedi Knights as a fledgling rebellion against the Empire is taking shape.  The combination of the team behind the show and the story they will be focusing on certainly has my attention.  Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, had this to say about the show.

“I couldn’t be more excited to explore new corners of the Star Wars universe. . . I think Star Wars Rebels will capture the look, feel and fun that both kids and their parents love about Star Wars.”

Even though I wasn’t a huge fan of the first film, I have to say I’m really looking forward to the next installment in the anthology series.  V/H/S/2 debuted earlier this year as S-VHS at the Sundance Film Festival and the universal opinion seemed to be that the film was a great improvement over the former set of horror shorts.  V/H/S/2 delivers a similar setup to the former film with a wrap-around story connecting four separate found footage short films that will sure to get your adrenaline going.  A new red-band trailer for the film will give you an idea of what’s in store with these new segments directed by Adam Wingard, Eduardo Sanchez and Gregg Hale, Gareth Evans (The Raid) and Timo Tjahjanto (Macabre), and Jason Eisener (Hobo With a Shotgun). It’s clearly NSFW.  Enjoy!

I f**ing love the internet. Everyday I’m fascinated on what may be sitting in my inbox or my daily news feed in regards to our world which thanks to the internet is awake 24/7. So of course I was pleasantly surprised when I woke up in the wee hours of the morning to take out the dog and decided to glance at my phone. I saw something about Arnold Schwarzenegger in talks to star in the remake of The Toxic Avenger. I immediately rubbed the newly formed sleep out of my eyes and gave a double glance. “Who is relaying this nonsense”, is the first thing to came to mind. Why in the hell would the former action mega star slash Governor of California want anything to do with the beloved tale from Lloyd Kaufman and crew? After searching a little more I found a clearer answer but not a definitive one.

Now it has been confirmed that Arnie will NOT play the infamous nerd turned superhero Toxie but there is speculation that he may have a supporting role. One of the roles that has been mentioned is that of “The Executioner”which is a an ex black op who will be training Toxie on his combat skills.  Personally, I would be rooting for Arnie to play a bad guy which I don’t know if he has since his horrible portrayal of Mr Freeze.  There is also word that he may play the father of the hero’s love interest, or the chief of security for the evil plant where the toxic ooze is produced.

The project will be overseen by producers LLoyd Kaufman and Michael Herz (the original creators of the The Toxic Avenger) and Hot Tub Time Machine director Steve Pink is set to direct. With the popularity of Toxie that spawned sequels, cartoons, comics, and the like, the iconic figure is perfect to see a return to the big-screen. Arnold didn’t do too well in his last return to screen (outside of the Expendables movies) so I think movie fans will enjoy seeing the Terminator/ Governor in this type of film.  Be on the lookout for more casting news on The Toxic Avenger remake as they develop.

Horror Anthology films are back. There is no doubt about it. Last year, we saw two of them – both from the same distribution company of Magnet Releasing – in V/H/S  (review here) and ABC’s of Death. This year, we will see the follow-up to the former film, V/H/S. However, we will have to wait for ABC’s of Death 2 until 2014. While I consider ABCs of Death to be ”Fantastic Fest: The Movie”,  the actual product wasn’t anywhere near the gratification one gets from the festival. Magnet is planning a 2014 release of the film. ABCs OF DEATH 2 is produced by Ant Timpson and Tim League, in conjunction with associate producers Todd Brown, Marc Walkow, Mitch Davis, and Ted Geoghegan.

Last year saw the unfortunate passing of one of Grindhouse Releasing’s original founders: Sage Stallone.  It was a huge loss for fans of exploitation and cult cinema as Sage was an advocate of uncovering lost films from the 70′s and 80′s and restoring them for new audiences to discover.  Sage worked alongside Bob Murawski, a frequent collaborator with Sam Raimi and co-founder of Grindhouse Releasing.  Thanks to their hard work and dedication genre fans were treated to releases of Cannibal Holocaust, Lucio Fulci’s The Beyond, and the entertaining and gory slasher Pieces.  These are just a few of the many titles the duo resurrected that Destroy the Brain’s monthly program Late Nite Grindhouse were able to show in 35mm over the years.  After a two year hiatus which included Bob Murawski working on Raimi’s recent Oz film, Grindhouse Releasing will return with two new titles later this year as well as a number of films scheduled for 2014!  It brings me great joy to see this fine company continue on in the tradition that Sage would have wanted.  

The psychedelic nightmare An American Hippie in Israel will see a theatrical run followed by a DVD/Blu-ray release on September 10.  Also receiving a DVD/Blu-ray release that same day will be the 1968 film starring Peter Cushing as a mad scientist – Corruption (also known as Carnage).  I haven’t seen either but I’ve heard An American Hippie in Isreal is so astoundingly bad (but entertaining) that it may well end up being  a part of the next midnight movie craze.  Corruption will also be seeing a theatrical release as well.

Four additional titles will follow in late 2013 and 2014: Sergio Sollima’s The Big Gundown, The Swimmer starring Burt Lancaster, Duke Mitchell’s Gone with the Pope, and S.F. Brownrigg’s Scum of the Earth (a.k.a. Poor White Trash Part 2). According to Murawski, the company’s entire back catalog will also appear in new Blu-ray editions soon thereafter.  The thing I’m most excited about here is clearly THE BIG GUNDOWN!

Like Late Nite Grindhouse on Facebook As Well!

I have been very nostalgic the past few days following the passing of Ray Harryhausen.  As evident in my bio (which can be seen at the bottom of every post) I grew up watching the fantasy worlds created from the mind of the legendary effects creator.  Now looking at these set photos from the upcoming and newly re-titled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – no longer simply Ninja Tutles as previously reported- it once again brings to mind another one of my childhood passions: PIZZA  TURTLES!  Shots of Megan Fox as reporter April O’Neil on set had surfaced late last week but these new photos below give us our first look at the film’s heroes and the enemy they will be facing.  Granted, these are the actors in their motion-capture suits, but it should still boost your excitement a little if you are a Turtles fan like myself.  You may notice that three of the four turtles are seen in the photos and all of them seem to be in chains and are being lead off by what looks like the newly designed “Foot” soldiers.  Who’s missing you ask?  To carry on the tradition of his loner vibe, it appears that Raphael is not present which may lead to a sub-plot having him rescue the rest of the group.  Maybe he will even implore the help of April or Casey Jones to help him in this mission.  We will have to wait and see when Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles hits theaters on June 6, 2014.

At the beginning of the year I composed my list of my Most Anticipated Films of 2013.  Not a single frame of the film or even a poster had been released yet, but that didn’t stop Alfonso Cuaron’s upcoming film from catapulting itself to the top of my list at the number #2 spot.  This of course stems from my adoration for his brilliant previous film Children of Men.  It should come as no surprise then that after finally seeing the new explosive trailer for the film that I’m even more confident in its place on my list.  The trailer is equal parts beautiful, startling, and downright terrifying.  Ridley Scott’s Alien introduced audiences to the idea “that in space no one can hear you scream.”  Well, that iconic phrase is made all the more real while watching this first teaser.  Gravity stars George Clooney and Sandra Bullock and is slated for release on October 4.  Dare I say that this should be a shoo-in at the Oscars next year?

Astronauts attempt to return to earth after debris crashes into their space shuttle, leaving them drifting alone in space.

David Bowie has always had a knack for the theatrics.  His elusiveness over the years and enigmatic persona he presents in the few interviews he even gives only adds to the idea that David Bowie truly exists only in his music and other creative projects and not actually as a person.  The Next Day, Bowie’s first album in over a decade, was released this past March and the album has already spawned one star driven music video featuring Tilda Swinton.  Gary Oldman and Marion Cotillard are the next two actors to be featured in the new video for the title track off the album.  Apparently, Youtube has already removed the video for one reason or another and I think it’s safe to say that the Catholic Church won’t be coming out in support of the profane video either.  The video is directed by The Runaways director Floria Sigismondi.  Blood, a little bit of nudity, and some gouged-out eyeballs are all on display.  Needless to say, it’s NSFW.  If you ever questioned Bowie’s stance on organized religion, I’m sure this video will make it loud and clear about his opinion on the matter.  Just don’t expect him to spell it out for you in an interview; that’s what his art is for.  Enjoy.

Yes, it is the UK Trailer but luckily us Yanks can see it over here. MSN UK brings the premiere of the first trailer for Edgar Wright’s The World’s End. This is the final entry in Wright’s Cornetto Trilogy (click on the link to hit the Wikipedia page if you are unsure what the hell I’m talking about). The film stars Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Martin Freeman, Eddie Marsan and Paddy Considine.

The World’s End arrives in the U.S. on August 23rd – which will be a busy day for genre fans considering that is the same date of Liongate’s You’re Next.

Some of you may be asking why is this a pick of the week. While I felt the film was a very mixed bag, there are elements of solid material here. The girls in the film are solid and at times the scares work. There is enough in this film that is worth a watch. We know the original short is on this release along with a commentary and some featurettes. However, we didn’t receive a copy for review so we are unable to tell you the length of said featurettes.

Guillermo del Toro, the Academy Award-nominated writer of Pan’s Labyrinth, presents this supernatural thriller that tells the haunting tale of two little girls who disappeared into the woods the day that their parents were killed. When the young sisters are found alive in a decrepit cabin, their uncle (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Game of Thrones) and his girlfriend (Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain, Zero Dark Thirty) take them in. I am so happy this film is on Blu-Ray as I was a huge fan of this film. If you have never seen it, it is worth a look!

Shane Carruth’s Primer made such an impact in the independent film world as well as the genre of heady sci-fi that his latest film, Upstream Color, will grab the attention of those interested in the genre. While the option to purchase the film sight unseen – unless you were lucky enough to see it at Sundance or SXSW – might be off putting for some, I have been told that the experience is worth it.

A woman (Amy Seimetz) is abducted and hypnotized with an organic material harvested from a specific flower. When she falls for a man (Carruth), the two come to realize he may also have been subjected to the same process. They search urgently for a place of safety within each other and struggle to assemble the fragments of their wrecked lives, unknowingly drawn into the life cycle of a presence that permeates the microscopic world.
