ST. LOUIS: THE INVITATION with Karyn Kusama in Attendance – 4/23 & 4/24!

When covering Fantastic Fest, I get the opportunity to check out a lot of genre cinema. Most films get a theatrical or VOD release about 6 months or later after viewing them. One film that I saw, which previously played at SXSW in March 2015, was The Invitation. Not a lot was said about the film except to keep in the dark and just know it was a paranoia piece and it all takes place at a dinner party. Since I think that is the optimal description of the film, that’s all I will give you. I walked away from the film feeling like I fell into a dark pit and got out at the last minute after seeing my exit slowly close and the oxygen escaping the imaginary pit I occupied. When I found out that it was playing in November at the St. Louis International Film Festival, I had hope that the director, who is a St. Louis native, would be making an appearance. Sadly, she didn’t (not sure if she wasn’t invited or couldn’t make it due to her schedule but I’d lean towards the latter). However, I told as many people as I could to go see the film. DTB Contributor, Jeremy Jones, went and texted me after the film stating “I thought I had a heart attack”.

When I found out it was getting a theatrical release, I felt it only right to get it to play in St. Louis. Plus, there was an offer from the lovely folks at Drafthouse Films, who is distributing the film, that they’d love to get director Karyn Kusama here during its theatrical exhibition. Thanks to my new relationship to STL Cinemas, the company that owns the Moolah Theatre and Lounge where Late Nite Grindhouse now resides, I was able to work it out.

It is my pleasure and honor to announce that director Karyn Kusama will be introducing her film, The Invitation, on Saturday, April 23rd at 7:20pm and Sunday, April 24th at 2:50pm at the Chase Park Plaza Cinema along with in-person Q&As hosted by myself.
