Our Take: Much like The Walking Dead, this series looks to be focused more on character drama than horror. Perhaps even more so, as Outcast‘s antagonists are internal. Slow burn with moody chills.

The Life After Volume 1 Trade Paperback

Writer: Joshua Hale Fialkov
Artist: Gabo
Publisher: Oni Press
Price: $10
Description: Jude’s life is nothing special. It seems like every day is just a repeat of the last one, until one day, he meets a woman and can suddenly see into her past — revealing that he is actually in Purgatory for suicides. Our Take: Equal parts Jacob’s Ladder, Brazil and What Dreams May Come, Joshua Hale Fialkov and Gabo’s comic qualifies as horror of the existential, surreal variety. In The Life After, demons are horrible monsters but they’re not horrible people and God is a hideous, tumor-like asshole.

The-Squiddler

The Squidder Trade Paperback

Writer/Artist: Ben Templesmith
Publisher: IDW PUBLISHING
Price: $18
Description: An old soldier from a forgotten war in a post-apocalyptic world that has left him behind is one of the last of the legendary Squidder Legions. Can a discarded relic with a death wish and a rebellious Squid priestess overthrow humanity’s tentacled alien overlords? Ben Templesmith returns to his roots to finally do the tentacle/Cthulhu-orientated book he’s always promised! Our Take: Ben Templesmith’s personal work has always been marked by his distinctively Australian sense of humor; unlike his breakout Wormwood: Gentleman Corpse, this title is far more serious and sees him stretch his muscles as a writer of both horror and drama. A fresh approach for Templesmith.

FALL OF CTHULHU OMNIBUS TP

Writer: Michael Alan Nelson
Artist: Greg Scott & Various
Publisher: BOOM! STUDIOS
Price: $40
Description: When Nyarlathotep, the crawling chaos himself, devises his most destructive plan yet, a disparate group of humans find themselves brought together as the unavoidable apocalypse draws near. Our Take: Cthulhu and the Mythos is rarely done right in comics. One of the big problems is that the signatures not necessarily of Lovecraft but of his Mythos stories are layers upon layers of narrative and often those narratives cover massive amounts of territory. The Cthulhu Mythos is epic horror, but that hasn’t been done in comics. Except for Fall of Cthulhu. Prepare to get lost in the Mythos all over again.
