Boxing and Revenge abound in synopsis of ‘Only God Forgives’

Nicolas Winding Refn is the hip director on everyone’s mind this year. After blowing away fans and critics with the Ryan Gosling vehicle Drive, the Danish writer/director is already jumping into a new project with Gosling.  We previously knew that Only God Forgives was going to center on a Thai-boxing match. Now, thanks to Collider getting a bit more information from AFM, we have a more detailed synopsis.

Julian, an Englishman living in Bangkok, is a respected figure in the criminal underworld.  He and his brother Billy run a Thai boxing club which is in fact a front for smuggling drugs to London.  When Billy is murdered, their mother Jenna arrives from London to bring back the body.  Jenna is herself the head of a powerful criminal organization and is used to getting exactly what she wants.  She sets out to settle the score along a bloody path of rage, betrayal, and vengeance, hurtling toward an ultimate confrontation and the possibility of redemption.

The logline for the film from AFM went as so:

Only God Forgives is a fast, powerful, high-profile, action and violent revenge story with Ryan Gosling and Kristin Scott Thomas, never seen before, as a merciless and terrifying mafia godmother.

Refn has previously commented on the fact that this is his version of a “western.”  Aside from Thomas and Gosling, Forgives also stars Luke Evans.  I am extremely excited about this film and can not wait to see Thomas in a darker role.

Somewhere between growing up on a steady diet of Saturday morning trips to the local comic-book shop, collecting an unhealthy amount of action figures, and frequent viewings of Ray Harryhausen and Hammer Horror films, came forth a nerdy boy that was torn between journalism and the arts. In high school, Michael found himself writing a movie column for the school newspaper. Yet, he went on to get a BFA in Studio Art at Webster University. When not writing about films, you can still find him discussing classic horror, collecting action figures, and reading Batman. Clearly, not much has changed.
